@diamondgirl I also have a sensitive lower back ... key element to avoid compressive discomfort/injury is to visualize length projecting from your pubic bone to your chest bone - this will reduce compression in the lumbar area - you will notice your back muscles engaging to facilitate this - you can also engage your transverse abdominals during this elongation as they have a fascial connection to your back muscles - firing your transverse abs will further engage your back extensors (protecting your back) ... firing your transverse abs will also generate intraabdominal pressure that will transfer some of the 'force' in the lumbar to your thoracic region (re-distribution). Try this first before using supports so you develop an internal sensation of protecting your lower back. This technique will then readily translate into many other postures. Overall, fold from your hip joint and not your lower back - when sitting, use the sensation of rolling forward over your sit bones as a tactile means of FEELING your pelvis move (and your spine following the pelvic movement).

That was absolutely wonderful, Kreg. Your soothing voice, perfect pacing and enjoyable sequence make this a favorite for me.

I do have one question. Seated forward bends with straight legs (either to the front or side) can be very uncomfortable for my low back. Will I get the same benefit by substituting either a bent-leg forward pose or use something like an exercise ball in front to support my upper body while I lean forward?

Thanks again for a great class!

Yes, I have been to Syndey and Melbourne, but not up north. I am actually looking at putting together a guest teaching tour of Australia much like I did for Dubai recently. Truly love Australia and the people - #1 dream 'retirement' destination.

hi wpbcarolina, thanks for your question regarding an alternative to child's pose ... looking at the general physical benefits of CP, they are stretching the lower back, knees/thighs, and ankles ... since your knees are problematic, you can gain similar benefits from a few easy options:
*lying on the back hugging the legs from under the thighs (lower back stretch)
*standing forward bend (maybe with soft knees to target the lower back)
*downward facing dog pose
*standing quadricep stretch (isolating one thigh muscle at a time)

Let me know if this helps. Other direct modifications are adding extra cushioning under the knees, and/or adding a cushion between the knees and thighs to reduce the amount of knee bend/flexion.

kreg

I have a bone on bone condition in my right knee. Can you recommend an alternative position for the childs pose to take the stress from the knees? Thanks!
