Children of the Desert: Chad: Abdallah, Mahamat, Achei – Children of Borkou (1998)

The village of Digré, at the foot of the Tibesti Mountains in Borkou province, wakes up to the call of the Muezzin. It is twelve hundred kilometers from Germina in Northen of Chad. Nine hundred people live in this lost corner of the desert. They are Goran, a branch of the Toubou – the only black nomadic tribe of the Sahara.

Abdallah Chaha is 13 years old. He knows he will spend nearly all of his day on the patch of land owned by his family in the palm grove on the outskirts of the village. His village is an agricultural one, even though his people are descended from Nomads. Abdallah and his friend Achei attend school, but another friend, Mahamat, doesn’t find it worth his while.
